I reckon Mrs. Cunningham had herself a heart-to-heart with Dennis because he kept his distance after that.

The New Year was moving along pretty fine. Then one day it got really sweet because a package came in our mailbox—from the Bradleys. The box rattled a little when I shook it. Momma opened it up and gave a little squeal. “Chocolates! How sweet!”

I started to rip the cellophane off the box, but Momma grabbed my wrist. “Jackie! Where’s your manners? First, we read the note.” She opened the envelope that came with the candy, pulled out a card, and read the message aloud.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Honeycutt,

Words cannot express our gratitude for the generous hospitality you extended to our entire family on New Year’s Eve and the following day. We know how unexpected the circumstances were and recognize the considerable risk you took in welcoming us into your home. It is evident where Ellie gets her kindness and concern for justice.

If there is anything we can do to repay you, please let us know. Next time you’re in Winston-Salem we would love to have you join us for a meal.

Please accept the chocolates as a small token of our heartfelt appreciation.
